THE ISLAND
One
of the top spots for tourist visits when holidaying on the
island of Crete, especially East Crete.
This fortified rock just a few minutes by small boat from
the village of Plaka, was for many years the last Leper
Colony in Europe, however its history is so much more.
The Island has since earliest times been a significant point
of defense for the area, and a much sought after property
the major fortifications were constructed by the Venetians,
improved by the Turks and maintained by the locals until the
2nd World War.
For an enjoyable visit to the island there are 3 options, to
go by small boat from the village of Plaka, a few minutes
only, to go by boat from Elounda taking just 15mins with
tickets available on departure. To travel from Agios
Nikolaos on a large organized tour with guides included in
several languages, for those seeking maximum information
this is the most serious option. The boats depart from Voulomenos and tickets are available from several points in Agios Nikolaos.
There is an entrance fee of 3euro when arriving on the
island.
Views of the island are a considerable draw for people
wanting to live or buy property in the area either around
the village of Plaka where there are a range of affordable
properties, or in the more tourist Elounda, this small town
has a wide variety of property available, including some
excellent business opportunities. The area also has a
selection of building plots for sale where the discerning
developer either for private use or for sale can still find
plots with spectacular sea views, many across to the island.
